My self-indulgent overanalysis lulls me to sleep, and I’m out cold until Max’s mom gets home from work and wakes us both up. She thanks me for bringing Max soup but says that for my own health she better get me home now. I’m grateful for the ride, which means I won’t have to bother Enrique or deal with Kat for a second time today.

Once Mrs. Cavanaugh gets me into her Honda Pilot, she starts plying me with questions about my new job. Then, out of nowhere, she says, “So things between you and Max are getting really serious, aren’t they?”

“Excuse me?”

“You and Max,” she repeats. “I see how the two of you are together. To be honest, it reminds me a little how Max’s dad and I were when we were in high school. We started dating when we were your age, you know. The end of our junior year. And look at how that turned out!”

I do not like the direction of this conversation. The more Mrs. Cavanaugh goes on about her future plans for me and her son, the more claustrophobic I feel. By the time she suggests that I join their extended family in Norfolk for Thanksgiving—which is five months away— my face is covered in a thin sheen of sweat, and my lungs are so constricted that I’m finding it hard to breathe.

Thankfully, we arrive at the apartment not long after.

Mrs. Cavanaugh turns to face me, a huge smile spread across her mouth. The smile quickly slips into a frown, and she places her hand on my forehead.

“Stella, are you feeling okay? You look like—”

“I’m fine,” I interrupt. “Just tired. Thanks for the ride!”

I hop out of the SUV before she can ask me what color I’d like the wedding invitations to be.
